Recognized locally as a very brilliant teenager, she found internatioanl recognition after receiving gold medals both in International Mathematical Olympiad (Hong Kong 1994) and International Mathematical olympiad (Canada 1995). Mirzakhani started at Sharif University of Technology where she got a BSc in Mathematics (1999). She holds a PhD from Harvard University (2004).
