The Marquette Golden Eagles (formerly known as the Marquette Warriors) is the name of the various sports teams of Marquette University. With a National Championshp in the 1977-1978 season, a National Invitational Tournament Championship, and a trip to the Final Four in 2003 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament, the Men's Basketball Team is a highly respected team in the NCAA. Although it no longer funds a football program, the school has highly-respected history in the sport, including an appearance in the first ever Cotton Bowl. Marquette University was founded in 1881 by John Martin Henni, the first Catholic bishop of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee, as Marquette College, and named after 17th-century missionary and explorer Father Jacques Marquette, S.J. The school attained its status as a university in 1907.
Marquette's intercollegiate athletic teams were the "Warriors" from May 1954 to July 1994 when the nickname was changed to Golden Eagles.
Marquette is a Division I member of the NCAA and competes in the elite Big East Conference.
