Markleysburg is a borough located in Fayette County, Pennsylvania. As of the 2000 census, the borough had a total population of 282.


Geography

Markleysburg is located at 39°44'14" North, 79°27'10" West (39.737178, -79.452646)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.8 km˛ (0.3 mi˛). 0.8 km˛ (0.3 mi˛) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 282 people, 90 households, and 68 families residing in the borough. The population density is 375.5/km˛ (989.3/mi˛). There are 105 housing units at an average density of 139.8/km˛ (368.3/mi˛). The racial makeup of the borough is 98.23% White, 1.77% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.00% from two or more races. 0.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 90 households out of which 33.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 64.4% are married couples living together, 6.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.4% are non-families. 23.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.60 and the average family size is 3.10.


In the borough the population is spread out with 23.8% under the age of 18, 5.0% from 18 to 24, 21.6% from 25 to 44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 29.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 45 years. For every 100 females there are 91.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.0 males.


The median income for a household in the borough is $22,083, and the median income for a family is $29,063. Males have a median income of $25,000 versus $15,625 for females. The per capita income for the borough is $12,312. 21.5% of the population and 21.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 31.7% of those under the age of 18 and 16.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
