Encyclopedia > Marie Christine

Marie Christine is a musical play written by Michael John LaChiusa. The original Broadway production was directed by Graciela Daniele and starred Audra McDonald (Marie Christine) and Anthony Crivello (Dante Keyes). Set in New Orleans of the 1890s, the story was loosely based on the Greek play, Medea, combined with voodoo rituals and practices. The original production opened at the Vivian Beaumont Theatre (Lincoln Center) in December of 1999 and received mixed reviews. Many critics complained of weaknesses in the book, while some audience members had difficulty with the score's complex musical structure. The production was nominated for several Tony Awards, including Best Book of a Musical (Michael John LaChiusa), Best Score (Michael John LaChiusa), and Best Leading Actress in a Musical (Audra McDonald).
