Magners Irish Cider hit Southern English pubs and clubs with stunning success in the summer of 2005. Cider in England is synonmous with Western England, with tales of pints of cider so strong and mind blowing that they lead to temporary blindess or sudden loss of bowel control. Magners like Superman has an alter ego. It is widely cherised across Ireland under its alias 'Bulmers'. Magners, infact started off its commerical life known as Bulmers. It was created in 1935 by William Magner as part of his cider making business located in Clonmel, Ireland. Magners then joint forces with H.P. Bulmer & Company of Hereford in England. The company was therefore known as Bulmer-Magner. This partnership was short lived however only lasting until 1949 when H.P Bulmer withdrew from the company. But the name Bulmers stuck and they continued for many years to produce Ireland's best-known cider. Bulmers of Clonmel's cider is therefore not trademarked for distribution in England, so for its unveiling on the market this summer it was known as Magners. To prevent confusion with the English cider of the same name it is sold outside of the Republic of Ireland as Magners.
Magner quickly established a successful business and in 1937 he joined forces with the famous English cider-makers H.P. Bulmer and Company.
In 1964 the company name was changed to Showerings (Ireland) Ltd. Soon afterwards the company moved its main processing operations to a new complex at Annerville, three miles from the centre of Clonmel, which was opened in 1965 by the then taoiseach, the late Sean Lemass, TD.
