History

MTV Asia in the Philippines on UHF Channel 23

MTV started, in May of 1992 in the Philippines marked as MTV Asia, as one of the channels on the STAR group, a partnership of Viacom, MTV's parent company, and STAR TV. It began airing on UHF Channel 23, licensed to Ermita Electronics Corporation, the country's first UHF TV station fully devoted to rebroadcasting a foreign satellite channel. In 1995, conflict of interest between Viacom and STAR, stemming from the latter's launch of its own music channel, Channel V, (But it still airs the same channel frequency at the time, after the demise of MTV Asia until October 1996). After UHF 23 was put off-the-air, the frequency was reassigned to ABS-CBN through a subsidiary, Amcara Broadcasting Corporation and has been rebranded as Studio 23. However, Studio 23 had to deal with the then-active agreement between Ermita Electronics and MTV. By 12 October 1996, MTV was being aired on Studio 23 during daytime hours, while original Studio 23 programming aired on primetime. MTV UHF Channel 41 / MTV Philippines

In 2001, MTV Networks Asia and Nation Broadcasting Company (NBC) signed a joint-venture agreement to form Music Source and acquired the rights to air MTV 24 hours a day on UHF Channel 41, which was licensed to NBC.


MTV Philippines, the channel concentrates on local Filipino talent in between international pop and rock superstars, rather than a pan-Asian format led by Indonesian, Malaysian and Singaporean artists that then dominate MTV Southeast Asia and alternate with international pop and rock talents. Within six months from its start of operations in January 1, 2001, it immediately won the hearts of upscale young Filipino viewers. It was said that the presence of this channel eventually caused the demise of Channel V Philippines simply due to intense competition.


After 6 years of partnership, UHF Channel 41 ceased broadcasting following the dissolution of the joint venture. [2]


MTV Philippines on IBC 13

MTV Phlippines engaged in a tie-up with government TV station Intercontinental Broadcasting Corporation, VHF Channel 13, in the middle of 2005 from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and again at 6:00 p.m to 8:00 p.m. The broadcast tie-up was ended after only three months. All Youth Channels, Inc.

After the dissolution of its joint venture with NBC, MTV Networks Asia signed a licensing agreement with All Youth Channel, Inc. (AYC), run by the some of the same people at Music Source, to control both MTV Philippines and its sister channel Nickelodeon. AYC will now own and operate 100% of the new MTV.


MTV Phillippines is now exclusive on Cable TV and satellite systems. [3]
