MoMA's Midtown location underwent extensive renovations in the 2000s, closing on May 21, 2002 and reponening to the public in building redesigned by the JapanesearchitectYoshio Taniguchi on November 20, 2004. From June 29, 2002 until September 27, 2004, a portion of its collection was on display in what was dubbed "MoMA QNS", a former Swingline Staple factory in Long Island City, Queens. MoMA's reopening brought controversy as its admission cost increased from USD $12 to USD $20, making it one of the most expensive museums in the city; however it retains its "pay what you wish" policy on Fridays after 4 p.m., due to sponsorship from Target Stores.
MoMAS is designed for extruders in which the operator adjusts the extruder input - be it the oil flow of the hydraulics, be it the reference input to the velocity control loop - by turning a knob attached to to a potentiometer.
MoMAS hardware consists of an industrial PC with Windows operating system, a plug in card for interfacing the computer with the process, an interface to acquire the analog signals, a pyrometer for measuring the exit temperature and a sensor for ram position.
MoMAS has been installed at the Research and Development Center of Extrusion, TU Berlin.
MOMAs temporary move of its massive collection, staff and offices from its legendary headquarters in Manhattan to its newfangled home in a redesigned staple factory in Long Island City brings the museum closer, geographically at least, to recent developments in contemporary art.
MOMAs best hang alongside newer works by artists like Robert Gober and John Baldessari in a changing view of the museums collectiontitled, rather prosaically, "To Be Looked At"occupying the role of baseball greats stooping to play a group of youngsters in a sandlot game.
There is Pipilotti Rists earthy, funny Mutaflor, a repeated round-trip voyage that goes in the artists mouth and exits her rosy rectum; and Douglas Gordons Monument to X, a video of a passionate kiss made epic by its length (14 hours) and the loops slow-motion duration (14 minutes).
