Lonquimay is the terminus of a broad gauge railway in Chile, which is often, still today, cited as the most practical railroad route over the Andes to Argentina. The line includes Las RaĆ­ces tunnel, 4,563 m, Chile's longest, but has not yet been extended beyond Lonquimay. There is a missing link between Lonquimay and Zapala in Argentina. The entire Lonquimay was covered by ashes from its offspring, but below the ashes there was plenty of snow, of which we melted some in the sun to get drinking water.
From the Lonquimay we slowly descended towards the new volcano.
