Mankins attended Mariposa High School in Mariposa, California, where he was an All-League performer and the team co-MVP with Anthony Dicioccio. After a standout high school career, Logan Mankins attended Fresno State University blocking for former Houston Texans quarterback David Carr. He started all 16 games, making him one of just three rookies to do so in 2005, and helping to justify his status as a first-round pick to early critics who considered him a "reach" in the first round. On October 16, he was ejected during the Patriots' loss to the Denver Broncos after striking defensive lineman Ebenezer Ekuban below the belt following a missed 53-yard field goal try by Adam Vinatieri. It is believed that he did so because his hand was stepped on by Ekuban.
