social democracy: Information from Answers.com (2765 words)
Most European social democratic parties are members of the Party of European Socialists, which is one of the main political parties at the European level, and most social democratic parties are members of the Socialist International, which is the historical successor to the Second International.
Social democracy is often distinguished from democratic socialism on the basis that most social democrats would be content with a society that combined elements of capitalism and socialism, while democratic socialists still have the objective of establishing, by democratic means, a wholly socialist society with a socialist economic system.
Social democrats reply that their policies in fact enhance individual rights by raising the standard of living of the great majority of the population, increasing social mobility, and eliminating the threat of extreme poverty.
The Encyclopedia of Contemporary Scandinavian Culture (2246 words)
The social democratic parties of Finland and Iceland are less easy to fit into a general Scandinavian model of social democracy, although it should be noted that both of these parties negotiated agreements with *agrarian parties during the 1930s and entered red-green coalitions very similar to their counterparts in Denmark, Norway and Sweden.
Social democratic parties were in government for most of this period, and presided over an era of high rates of economic growth, low unemployment and rising living standards.
If the Scandinavian social democratic parties have lost much of their distinctiveness in terms of ideology, then most scholars would agree that this is probably the case as far as the organisation of the parties is concerned as well.
