As the Japanese system of writing matured and expanded, kanji began to be used to write certain parts of speech, such as nouns, adjectives and verbs, while hiragana was used to write verb endings (okurigana), uniquely Japanese words, and words where the kanji is too difficult to read or remember.
Originally they were written using kanji, chosen either for their meaning (煙草 tabako) or to spell the word phonetically (tempura 天婦羅 or 天麩羅).
The specific grade-level breakdown of the Education kanji is known as the Gakunen-betsu kanji haitōhyō 学年別漢字配当表), or the "GakushĂ» Kanji".
