Pat Patterson 1 September 1979 Patterson is awarded the title due to his status as WWF North American Champion. At the time, the WWF's kayfabe explanation was that Patterson won a tournament held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil defeating Antonio Inoki in the final to become the first Intercontinental Champion. WWE has since retconned this to claim that Patterson unified his North American Championship with a fictitious South American Championship.
