Encyclopedia > List of Bronx neighborhoods

This is a list of neighborhoods in the Bronx, one of five boroughs of New York City, grouped by what general region of the Bronx they are in. Neighbourhood is also a term in topology. ... Main article: New York City The Bronx is one of the five boroughs of New York City in the United States. ... The definitions of the political subdivisions of the state of New York differ from those in certain other countries or even various other U.S. states, leading to misunderstandings regarding the governmental nature of an area. ... Nickname: The Big Apple Official website: City of New York Government Counties (Boroughs) Bronx (The Bronx) New York (Manhattan) Queens (Queens) Kings (Brooklyn) Richmond (Staten Island) Mayor Michael Bloomberg (R) Geographical characteristics Area Total 468. ...

The Northwest Bronx and South Bronx are often grouped together as the "West Bronx"; all areas not included in the South Bronx are grouped into the somewhat nebulous "North Bronx" designation. Note that the term "South Bronx" strictly refers to the southwestern portion of the borough.

The east-west divider in the Bronx is sometimes cited as Jerome Avenue, as numbered streets west of it are designated "west" while those east are designated "east" (e.g. "East 180th Street"). The flaw in this system is that the vast majority of the borough is in this eastern portion since the Bronx's street numbering system is based on that of Manhattan; Jerome Avenue therefore does not represent an even east-west divide for the Bronx. In addition, the streets in the far-East Bronx are not numbered at all. The Borough of Manhattan, highlighted in yellow, lies between the East River and the Hudson River. ...

The names of many (but not all) neighborhoods in the Bronx have low "currency", that is, are not invoked very commonly when referring to the neighborhood they name. This is in contrast to neighborhood names in Brooklyn and Queens which tend to have higher currency. However, this is not true for all neighborhoods in the Bronx; while someone living at East 213th Street & White Plains Road might prefer to describe their location simply as "Gun Hill Road" (a nearby thoroughfare) rather than "Williamsbridge", Riverdale, Throgs Neck, and others have currency levels comparable to neighborhoods in Brooklyn or Queens. In the list below, neighborhood names with higher levels of currency are displayed in capital letters.

Northwest Bronx
Located north of 183rd Street and west of the Bronx River Parkway, this part of the Bronx is the most heavily commercial and densely populated, and is home to many diverse working- and middle- class communities. It is easily the most sophisticated part of the borough, particularly the Riverdale section which contains many suburban-style houses.
East Bronx
Located east of the Westchester Creek, East Tremont Avenue, and the Bronx River, this portion of the Bronx features many houses not found in the neighboring South Bronx. Most whites headed out to nearby Westchester County as a result of urban flight.
SOUTH BRONX
Located south of 183rd Street and west of the Bronx River Parkway, this part of the Bronx fell on hard times from the late 1960s until the early 1990s, and has plagued the borough's reputation ever since, even leading to then-President Jimmy Carter's declaration of the South Bronx as "the worst neighborhood in America." While much of the South Bronx still remains abandoned and impoverished, it has begun to recover and is even showing some signs of gentrification in the near-future. In addition, crime in New York City has dropped so substantially in recent times that other cities, notably Detroit, today have far higher crime rates than the clich├ęd South Bronx.
