The land became part of the city in 1928, when it was acquired from neighboring Coitsville. Initially agricultural land, it became Youngstown's attempt to create a post-war suburban-style development in the 1950s. Along with homes, suburban-style shopping options were also created, with the Lincoln Knolls Plaza strip mall. The plaza was successful in its early years, but faltered in the 1970s, with the rise of indoor shopping malls. Today, the plaza is highlighted by a grocery store and government offices.
