Launched in 1999, the United States Mint's 50 State Quarters Program is a 10-year initiative that honors each of the states in the order that they ratified the Constitution or were admitted into the Union.
In Fiscal Year 2002, the United States Mint manufactured approximately 15 billion coins and generated revenue of $1.8 billion and nearly $1 billion was returned to the United States Treasury.
