Lemhi County is a county located in the state of Idaho. As of 2000, the population is 7,806. The county's county seat is Salmon, Idaho6.


Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 11,835 km˛ (4,570 mi˛). 11,821 km˛ (4,564 mi˛) of it is land and 14 km˛ (5 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.12% water. The highest point is Scott Peak at 11,393 feet.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 7,806 people, 3,275 households, and 2,217 families residing in the county. The population density is 1/km˛ (2/mi˛). There are 4,154 housing units at an average density of 0/km˛ (1/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 96.63% White, 0.10% Black or African American, 0.60% Native American, 0.18% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.77% from other races, and 1.68% from two or more races. 2.18% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 3,275 households out of which 28.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.80% are married couples living together, 6.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.30% are non-families. 27.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.38 and the average family size is 2.91.


In the county the population is spread out with 25.50% under the age of 18, 5.50% from 18 to 24, 22.70% from 25 to 44, 29.50% from 45 to 64, and 16.80% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 43 years. For every 100 females there are 99.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.50 males.


The median income for a household in the county is $30,185, and the median income for a family is $35,261. Males have a median income of $30,558 versus $18,289 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,037. 15.30% of the population and 10.60% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 19.80% of those under the age of 18 and 10.30% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
