Lawrence County is a county located in the state of Pennsylvania. As of 2000, the population is 94,643. Its county seat is New Castle6.


Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 940 km˛ (363 mi˛). 934 km˛ (360 mi˛) of it is land and 6 km˛ (2 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.63% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 94,643 people, 37,091 households, and 25,889 families residing in the county. The population density is 101/km˛ (263/mi˛). There are 39,635 housing units at an average density of 42/km˛ (110/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 94.98% White, 3.61% Black or African American, 0.10% Native American, 0.27% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.19% from other races, and 0.84% from two or more races. 0.56% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 37,091 households out of which 28.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.50% are married couples living together, 11.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.20% are non-families. 27.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.47 and the average family size is 3.00.


In the county, the population is spread out with 23.10% under the age of 18, 8.30% from 18 to 24, 25.70% from 25 to 44, 23.60% from 45 to 64, and 19.30% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 90.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.90 males.
