Lane is a town located in Williamsburg County, South Carolina. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 585.

Lane is located at 3331'31" North, 7952'46" West (33.525346, -79.879560)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 10.3 km (4.0 mi). 10.3 km (4.0 mi) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 585 people, 223 households, and 148 families residing in the town. The population density is 56.9/km (147.4/mi). There are 256 housing units at an average density of 24.9/km (64.5/mi). The racial makeup of the town is 9.23% White, 90.43% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.34% from two or more races. 0.68% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 223 households out of which 30.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 33.6% are married couples living together, 28.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.6% are non-families. 30.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.62 and the average family size is 3.35.


In the town the population is spread out with 29.1% under the age of 18, 8.5% from 18 to 24, 23.8% from 25 to 44, 23.1% from 45 to 64, and 15.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 79.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 73.6 males.


The median income for a household in the town is $19,659, and the median income for a family is $28,472. Males have a median income of $21,635 versus $15,000 for females. The per capita income for the town is $9,963. 33.2% of the population and 30.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 42.8% of those under the age of 18 and 26.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
