In 1803 the English monastery at Lamspringe in Germany was suppressed (as part of the 'Enlightenment'), and the school which it had run since the mid-seventeenth century was ordered to be sent back to England.
By the energy and foresight of Dom Bede Brewer, then President of the English Benedictine Congregation (EBC), it was resettled at Ampleforth.
When the Abbey of Lamspringe was suppressed, the library was at first left in place.
