Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,535 km (979 mi). 591 km (228 mi) of it is land and 1,944 km (751 mi) of it is water. The total area is 76.69% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 227,511 people, 89,700 households, and 62,520 families residing in the county. The population density is 385/km (997/mi). There are 93,487 housing units at an average density of 158/km (410/mi). The racial makeup of the county is 95.40% White, 1.99% Black or African American, 0.11% Native American, 0.90% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.66% from other races, and 0.92% from two or more races. 1.70% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 89,700 households out of which 31.10% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.10% are married couples living together, 10.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.30% are non-families. 25.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.50 and the average family size is 3.03.


In the county, the population is spread out with 24.20% under the age of 18, 7.30% from 18 to 24, 29.70% from 25 to 44, 24.70% from 45 to 64, and 14.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 94.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.50 males.


The median income for a household in the county is $48,763, and the median income for a family is $57,134. Males have a median income of $40,916 versus $28,434 for females. The per capita income for the county is $23,160. 5.10% of the population and 3.50% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 6.50% of those under the age of 18 and 5.40% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
