UH -Top Education Stories - The aid dilemma (718 words)
One student at the Ladue, Mo., school is giving up her dream of attending Bowdoin College; another will turn down Washington University in St. Louis; a third quickly applied to the University of Missouri-Columbia after she received disappointing financial aid award letters from two pricey private schools.
As schools struggle to make the money go further, many of next year's freshmen face a wider gap between the cost of college and their aid package, or awards that feature larger loans than in years past.
The school came through with an extra $1,200 in grants and access to $5,000 more in loans, bringing her package to more than $25,000 of the $28,600 cost.
