The company was started with $6 million of venture capital and utilized excess capacity at Toshiba for manufacturing, an early example of the fabless semiconductor manufacturing model. The company focused on the development of leading edge proprietary CAD tools (LDS-Logic Design Sysytem) that could be utilized to develop ASICs. The logical development of fabrication and test facilities followed. LSI Logic was valued by it's customers as a company who would take responsibility for the complete design and development of "Systems on a Chip" solutions. As the ASIC market matured third party design tools became preeminent and with the very high cost of fab development, the foundary fab model gained momentum and LSI returned in 2005 to a fabless semiconductor business. During it's ASIC years, LSI Logic invested in core technologies such as microprocessors, communication devices, and video compression devices such as MPEG. These core technologies have been used together with acquisitions to better place the company as a intellectual property owner. In 1998 it bought troubled Symbios Logic from Hyundai. It is often recognized as a pioneer of the CMOS ASIC [citation needed] market and in 2006 celebrated its 25th year of business.
