Anti-discrimination protection

Incitement to hatred on the ground of sexual orientation is prohibited since 2003, and in 2004 an anti-discrimination law (Ley Nº 17.817) was passed to create an Honorary Commission to Combat Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and other forms of Discrimination including sexual orientation and identity discrimination. Commission is intended to recommend laws to protect against various forms of discimination. The Commission was finally installed on March 21, 2007. Recognition for both same-sex and opposite sex couples

All couples can gain entry to a civil union, after 5 years together. The bill was proposed by Margarita Percovich and was an election promise of the Broad Front coalition back in 2001. The bill becomes law on 30-11-2007, which allows same-sex and opposite-sex couples to enter into a civil union after they live together for five years, and would offer some of the benefits that married couples are afforded. The legislation passed the Senate in September 2006, and in November 2007 the Chamber of Deputies passed the bill. now it has entered into effect.
