According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,958 km˛ (1,142 mi˛). 947 km˛ (366 mi˛) of it is land and 2,011 km˛ (776 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 67.98% water. It was originally part of the Waldo Patent.

The racial makeup of the county is 98.28% White, 0.24% Black or African American, 0.22% Native American, 0.36% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.12% from other races, and 0.78% from two or more races. 0.57% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
