The Killiks live in mostly independent colonies, or nests, spread throughout dozens of worlds in the Unknown Regions. Each colony typically comprises several different races of insects (perhaps sub-species) as well as so-called "joiners" assimilated from other races. Little was known about the Killiks until they were rediscovered some time after the defeat of the Yuuzhan Vong. It was discovered that they were a hive-based species who, until UnuThul took control of them, were peaceful. The region of space inhabited by the Killiks borders on Chiss space; colonization near the border nearly resulted in an all-out war between the two parties, inspired by the so called Dark Nest.
