Khiam is a village located in South Lebanon governorate, near Nabatieh city


It was a former French barrack complex originally built in the 1930s. It became a base for the Lebanese army before falling under SLA control and and in 1985, was renovated into a detention and interrogation centre. It remained in use for detention and interrogation of Lebanese civilians until its closure (termed by some as “liberation”) in 2000, following Israel’s withdrawal from Lebanon.


Khiam was notorious for extensive use of torture, and the atrocious conditions in which inmates were kept. What is more controversial is the question of whether, and to what extent, the centre was operated by and/or for the Israelis. Israel has denied direct involvement in Khiam, claiming to have delegated operation of the centre to the South Lebanon Army (SLA) as far back as 1988. The South Lebanon Army (SLA) was a Lebanese militia formed in the late 1970s. ...


However, this claim is open to dispute. In particular, an affidavit penned by IDF Brigadier General Dan Halutz for the Israeli Ministry of Defence admits a considerable level of Israeli involvement, including paying salaries and providing training for interrogators. An affidavit is a formal sworn statement of fact, written down, signed, and witnessed (as to the veracity of the signature) by a taker of oaths, such as a notary public. ... Khiam prison was a detention and interrogation centre during the years of the Israeli occupation in Southern Lebanon.
Ryadh's brother Adel was detained in Khiam too; when Adel refused to tell the interrogators what they wanted to hear they hauled in his wife Mona and tortured her so that he could hear her screams.
Former detainees all say that in the early days of Khiam's time as a detention centre Israeli interrogators worked alongside their SLA counterparts, and their evidence is corroborated by that of those guards who worked in the prison.
