Sutherland's day included a streak of five consecutive birdies from his seventh to 11th holes to vault him from a tie for 33rd to a share of sixth place.
Sutherland chipped in at 16 and 18, and dropped a 36-foot putt for birdie at the par-3 seventh.
Sutherland also finished tied for 33rd in 2001 and tied for ninth in 2003 at the match play event before coming back to Tucson last year.
