Little Lima/or "Kendallsuyo"

If you live in Kendale Lakes and are not familiar with a chicha morada, you might be given the "gringo pendejo" look. Many of South Florida's Peruvian residents reside in this neighborhood..SW 137 Ave has been commemorated by both the Dade Public Works and the Elections Dept list [as of 1994] in honor of the famous Peruvian admiral Almirante Grau Miguel with a bronze statue of his bust containing biographical information (in Spanish) flanking the shaded entranceway into the Lakes. There is also La Bodega, the Peruvian grocery, Aromas Del Peru, two chinese-Peruvian restaurants (or chifa's) within near reach, a handful of pollerias within near reach (El Pollon in Higate Square, La Granja in Miller Square, another near the old Il Piatto restaurant), a panaderia in the Kendall mall with the Kendall Bookshelf , and many convenience stores that sell regular and Diet Inca Kola along with the main chain supermarkets and even an Argentinean market (Puerto Madero) in Winston Park which also sells the tasty sweet drink. There are also many Colombian residents living in this (still) quieter residential neighborhood [there are actually two rinconcitos in the same strip plaza on sunset and 152 ave], but the Hammocks contains more above all else. For informative videos on "Kendallsuyo" please watch this episode of "Ventana Indiscreta" on Youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dbexbJyPulU (part 1) and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qmytAqeXeMA (Part 2)

HISTORY

A brief (and overlooked) history of (the original) Kendale Lakes....

Kendale Lakes (and all of West Kendall, as a matter of fact) was once big with the Miami Jewish population...many prominent attorneys formerly lived there throughout the mid and late 70's. It was truly indicative of a bedroom community up until the mid to late 80's. The portion east of 142 ave and between sunset dr and n kendall dr was built by Janis homes c. 1970, the portion west of 142 ave was built by Caravel homes around 1973-74. The Kendale Lakes shopping plaza now containing three different fast food chain stores, a Petsmart, an Office Depot, Sims, and an El Dorado Blvd was once a modest walk-through outdoor mall with mom and pop stores. It was still a megaplex back (450000 square feet with one anchor mall and two strip malls and a roller skating rink on its eastern/northern edge periphery) in its day and was the only sign of civilization west of 137 ave. The gas stations did not get built until the mid to late 80's and up until that time everyone went to the Winston Park Mobil which used to have a filling attendant. The anchor (walk-through) mall included Sentry Drugs, Marino's pizza (now in the front entrance part where the fast food joints are), a Buning the Florist, a sporting goods store, Mr Deli-Tizer (ok for a quick fix), Stride Rite (right next to K-mart), a sheet music store, a travel agency (Kendale Lakes travel agency?), a Luria's, Waldenbooks, a Juice Tree (Colombian owned cafeteria oasis which moved to the Miller Square shopping center), Kendale Lakes Barber Shop (which moved to its current location on the eastern permiter of the mall), a Popeye's health food store, and the Wometco Theatres. The old K-Mart had a much different set-up with a diner (THE EATERY..it was called) in the back which was good for a burger and fries. Everyone used to love the bagel place on the SE corner of Kendall and 107 ave which was replaced by baskin-robbins somewhere in the mid 80's. In the late 70's-early 80's the circus and the petting zoo would come into town and they would have elephant rides. On the east/northern side of the plaza with the mini strip-plaza islands (all the addresses here read sw 84 st, a short-ranging residential drag, not Kendall Dr..and was rather confusing for emergency vehicles) was the old Winn-Dixie (where the current Dandy Bear is), Kendale Lakes Pizzeria (now Mike's), Mark Twain's Riverboat Playhouse (8700 sw 137 ave...yeah the one with faux turn of the century luster and the animatronics show...just east of the Dance Duds/ Paint and Decor strip plaza..later doubled as Uncle Funny's which flopped out after only seeing the light of day for a year or so... the paddlewheel adorned clapboard structure was razed to the ground shortly thereafter), the Kendale Lakes tape rental club, Aspen Drugs (where Get Smart, the educational supplies store is now), and a Mexican take-out joint which was big with the Sunset kids. You could also fire-eat at the Liquor store. Il Piato Restaurant, a wonderful place, opened up with the new northern addition to the mall around 1985-86 and the atmosphere had a certain non-Kendalyte chic to it. A great escape for those who had second reserves about shelling quarters (or at the time, dimes) away or negotiating spaces which required smaller-than-average turning circle smarts.

The only other part of Kendale Lakes that existed was obviously the country club part..the lake where the Schwinn bike meets commence was once a beautiful swimming hole. Before the country club was bought over by the Miccosukee tribe, beatiful trees canopied the greens, as well as the lake. There were two pools at the country club, a kiddie pool on the right, and the olympic sized adult pool on the left but now it is a volleyball court. The Silver Palace chinese restaurant on the east side of sw 137 ave just shy of Miller Rd was once big with the Jewish population that lived there. Many of the original homeowners left after the hurricane came and went.

Burger King had been around since 1979 or so, KFC was built in 1990-91 and Miami Subs Grill a few years later.

Higate Square (not exactly in Kendale Lakes but the Publix services the residents) was built around 1979 or 1980, and the strip malls to the west of the Publix flanking Kendall included Taco Viva (where that hole-in-the-wall Japanese restaurant? next to Don Pan? is), Kaufman & Roberts electronics (currently Don Pan), Peaches Music (now Einstein's), Haagen-Dazs ice cream (now the parilla place) and Carmine's market (now Che'Tano carniceria). There was a good seafood restaurant behind the visible set of strip malls near Kendall, shooting down from Publix. Broadway Bagels, Dunkin Donuts, Wendy's, and Barnett were there from the beginning..though Wendy's was different way back when with a salad bar and funky tables with old newspaper clipping-type-print. Goodyear was Norton Tire and was only accessible from a side winding road (sw 93 st/138 ct)either off of Kendall or 137 ave..you could theoretically park and walk there but the ticket takers would give you the evil eye...originally for the apt folks..the Blockbuster Video catty-corner from the strip mall down from Publix was a Lindsley Lumber, a very very popular home improvement store in the old days down here.

El Conquistador used to be home to many northern retirees, particularly Jewish...the Promenade was never gated. Lake Laura Apts used to be called Lakeport. You used to be able to cut behind the farm store to go behind the Kendale Lakes mall on some rock road trail..the people at Dadeland Pool next door didn't mind. The storage warehouse clusters/ standalone office building on sw 84 st was a grassy field. The mall entrance on sw 84 st had a nice looking shaded bus bench. The Sovereigns also had many retirees and had a custom-made retro-looking lampost that stood vigil over 147 ave back when it was one-lane each way with next to no traffic. The Kendale Lakes neighborhood walls had a retro-looking winding line (red-colored) pattern until around 1986. Kendale Lakes Blvd (aka sw 82 st, where the park is/142 ave was a four-way stop until 1986).
