Kaya is a roots reggae-album released by Bob Marley & the Wailers in 1978. In the Rastafari movement, "Kaya" is synonymus with marijuana. The album consists of tracks recorded alongside those present on the Exodus album in 1977. The album has a very relaxed, laid back sound, lacking much of the militant quality of the Wailers lyrically and musically. They received criticsm for 'going soft' as a result of the general sound of the album as well as the theme: Songs primarily revolving around love, as well as marijuana and reflections on Marley's attempted murder. The album's release coincided with the One Love Peace Concert, heralding Marley's triumphant return to Jamaica from exodus in London after the murder attempt. It is important to note that many of the songs present on this album, as well as it's sister album Exodus, are rerecorded versions of older tracks present on albums like African Herbsman. Well known songs from the album include "Is This Love" and "Sun is Shining". Cover of the Bob Marley & The Wailers album Kaya. ... Kaya - Bob Marley & the Wailers - Song Listings (567 words)
Kaya continues what has become an unspoken tradition in the evolution of Bob Marley & the Wailers discography -- blending western sounds and motifs with the icons and traditions from the very core of Jamaican society.
Likewise, the album Kaya could be easily construed as an open love letter or musical paean to the lifestyle that Marley so eagerly embraced and promoted.
The 2001 "Definitive Remasters" edition of Kaya also includes the non-LP "Smile Jamaica." Although initially issued as the flip side of "Satisfy My Soul," the song was recorded more than a year prior to this album, resulting in a somewhat odd juxtaposition.
