Tyers graduated from Montana State University with a degree in macrobiology and, after marrying Mark, became certified to teach K-12. When her church opened a private school, she took over teaching the lower grades. In 1979, she retired from teaching to start a family; their son Matthew was born in 1981, and she began writing in earnest two years later.
Tyers is a flutist in her hometown philharmonic orchestra.
Tyers is probably best known for her contributions to the Star Wars Expanded Universe (especially her novels The Truce at Bakura and Balance Point).
Firebird was a solid space opera tale about a girl born the third child in a royal family, but expected to die in a world in which the royals and other nobles practice a strict policy of heir limitation.
