KVCW began in 1989 as KFBT, an independent UHF station, broadcasting on channel 33 and Prime Cable channel 6. KFBT gained much acclaim through the 1980s as a firmly local station, retaining such features as the scary B-movie night "Saturday Fright at the Movies," hosted by Count Cool Rider, which aired at 10:00pm. According to the KFBT website, the station primarily broadcast older programming during this era as well as pro wrestling...most notably World Class Championship Wrestling and the NWA. After the launch of the WB Television Network, KFBT became a WB affiliate. After the Sinclair Broadcasting Group purchased KUPN, and setup a local marketing agreement with KFBT, KFBT lost its WB affiliation to the newly rebranded KVWB and again became an independent station. KFBT began using the moniker "Gold 33" and began showing mainly newer syndicated programming. Several years later, Sinclar Broadcasting purchased KFBT. KFBT briefly shared a news department, courtesy of the Sinclair Broadcast Group's "News Central," with KVWB. KFBT's newscast aired at 7:00pm. Just like KVWB, the station's news department was shut down after only a few months. KVWB is now showing KVBC's news cast at 10:00 PM. However, there are no plans in the works to bring another news cast to Gold 33. It has been speculated that this may change once KFBT becomes the Las Vegas CW Affiliate.
