KNXV signed on the air in September, 1979 by UHF broadcaster Ed Cooperstein, doing business as the New Broadcasting Company. Its programming originally consisted of first-run and off-network syndicated shows and children's programming during the day, and the ON-TV Subscription Television service in the evening and late-night hours. One of the station's most memorable early promotions was the "Bluebird of Happy News," with a man dressed up in a bird costume in a helicopter taking jabs at local news on other stations. ON-TV lasted a couple years until cable television began to prosper across the Phoenix area. KNXV eventually became a full-time independent station but running alot of cartoons, old sitcoms, old movies, and drama shows. They pulled mediocre ratings and was way behind longtime indepenednt KPHO 5. But Cooperstein sold the station to Scripps Howard Broadcasting in 1984 (with Scripps closing the deal in early 1985). Under Scripps Howard KNXV began purchase more recent sitcoms often outbidding KPHO for strong shows. Scripps Howard promised local newscasts would be added. As a result the station gained the FOX affiliation at the network's inception in 1986. By 1990 KNXV nearly tied KPHO in the ratings though they still produced no local news. In 1993 Fox considered affiliating with KPHO when its deal with KNXV expired at the end of 1994. But in a corporate deal with New World announced May of 1994 Fox opted to affiliate with crosstown KSAZ 10 that December. This caused a massive 3 stage affiliation switch in Phoenix. In the first round of changed CBS would move to KPHO in September of 1994 leaving KSAZ 10 an independent until December 1994.

ABC could have stayed on 3 KTVK but KNXV's owner Scripps Howard threatened to switch ABC stations in Cleveland and Detroit to CBS (markets also affected by the Fox New WOrld deal). In order for Scripps Howard to keep ABC on WXYZ Detroit and WEWS Cleveland, ABC agreed to take Scripps Howard's WMAR Baltimore, 28 WFTS Tampa, and 15 KNXV Phoenix. KNXV in turn agreed to produce the same ammount of local news as KTVK had been doing as an ABC affiliate. KNXV also agreed to not preempt any ABC programming except for local news emergencies. The deal with KTVK would not expire until the Winter 1995. KTVK opted to hold ABC affiliation until the deal expired. But KTVK began dropping ABC shows in stages.

As a result the ABC affiliation migrated to KNXV in stages, with Good Morning America being the first ABC program shown on KNXV beginning at the end of August 1994 at the first round of changes. Shortly after Mike & Maty would move to KNXV and then Loving. Veteran journalists Charles Gibson and Diane Sawyer, who have hosted the show since the late 1990s. ...

In the second round of changes that December the Fox affiliation went to KSAZ channel 10. But the Fox Kids programming would move to KTVK replacing ABC Saturday Morning Cartoons and on Sunday Mornings. KNXV then picked up ABC World News Now, Nightline, ABC Saturday Morning Cartoons. So KNXV became an independent station with secondary ABC affiliation. KSAZ is the call sign for FOX networks affiliate in Phoenix, Arizona. ...

In the third and final round of changes the complete ABC affiliation, which was originally held by KTVK, switched over to 15 KNXV in January 1995. At that point KNXV kept about 1/3 of the syndicated shows they had. The rights most of their KNXV's other syndicated shows moved to KTVK (most of which KTVK would run on a managed station that signed on later 1995 61 KASW). A few shows went to KUTP 45 and a couple shows went to KSAZ. By 1995 KNXV ran a 6-7 AM Newscast, 11 AM newscast, 5 PM news, 6 PM News, and 10 PM News. KTVK is an independent television station in Phoenix, Arizona. ...

As time moved on KNXV added more first run syndicated shows. Last year they added Wheel Of Fortune & Jeopardy. Today they are a fairly typical ABC affiliate producing a good amount of local news.

KNXV has begun installations at its transmission facilities which will double the station's digital / high definition signal output power. Work began in June 2005. 2005 is a common year starting on Saturday of the Gregorian calendar and is the current year. ...
