History

98.5 KLUC was a top 40 station through most of the 1970's. KLUC competed with rival KENO 92.3 until they switched to KOMP in February 1981. Although, KLUC was still top 40 in the 1980's, a new program director was looking to change the direction of the station. Instead of playing so much rock and classic rock, KLUC began mixing in more R&B soul into their mix beginning in 1984. KLUC would once again have more competition in the mid 1980's with newcomer 97.1 KYRK "Power 97". KLUC did beat KYRK 97.1 FM in the ratings race forcing them to switch formats in 1993 to KXPT 97.1 FM. KLUC 98.5 FM finally abandoned their Top 40 format for Rhythmic cotemporary hits format in 2003.

On September 11, 2001, after the World Trade Center attacks, KLUC stopped playing music and devoted the next couple of days to news and took calls from listeners on their reaction to World Trade Center Attacks in New York City. September 11 is the 254th day of the year in the Gregorian calendar (255th in leap years). ... 2001: A Space Odyssey. ...
