K3b is a CD and DVD authoring application for GNU/Linux and other Unix-like operating systems designed for the K Desktop Environment.
The actual disc recording in K3b is done by the command line utilities cdrecord, cdrdao, and growisofs.
One of the odd things K3b can do is "hide" the first track of a CD in the first pregap when you are burning it, thus requiring you to scan backwards from the second track to hear it.

K3b is the only app I've needed to burn data DVDs, audio/data CDs, and even a bootable floppy disk image for flashing the bios.
If you use the latest vanilla kernel, your burner might not be recognised as a burner, but as a writer because of some new permission checks that have been introduced in the new kernel.
