Seminar (676 words)
This is Becker’s central issue as someone who feels compelled to understand what it means to be both Jewish and German, as someone who is keenly aware of the social upheavals during his lifetime (the Holocaust and the three postwar Germanies) – two facets that provide the focal points for Rock’s book.
Consequently, Becker’s texts are carried by his ideas, but he demands of himself that he not formulate them into an opinion that forces itself upon the reader.
Generally, David Rock’s book on Jurek Becker is disappointing for what it is billed to be (a comprehensive assessment); but it is, with a few exceptions, a good compendium of Becker’s “conception of himself as a writer” and human being.
