He was born in Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan, Wales in 1841. He wrote the song Myfanwy and the hymn tune Aberystwyth. Joseph Parry went to the United States in 1854 and was an ironworker. There was a large Welsh community there and he became involved in strengthening Welsh culture locally. He returned to Britain and studied music in London and Cambridge. A resident of Penarth later in his years, he died on February 17, 1903 and is buried in St. Augustines Churchyard, Penarth.
