Biography

Born in Pasadena, California, Ranft studied in the Character Animation program at the California Institute of the Arts. After graduation, Ranft worked at Disney throughout the 1980s doing story work on animated features including The Lion King and Beauty and the Beast. Joining Pixar in 1992, he worked on story development for all of Pixar's feature film releases, most recently as Head of Story on Cars. Joe was sitting at a table with his beautiful children and I sat down across from him with mine.
Joe was one of the kindest, most open-hearted and -minded, and most generous mentors it's ever been my fantastic luck to encounter.
Joe, who was very big even as a kid, stayed up with me as my bodyguard and made sure nobody came near me. Of course he teased me forever about it but that is the kind of guy Joe was.
