Choo is a Malaysian of Hakka Chinese descent who was born in Penang in 1961 into a family of shoemakers. He made his first shoe when he was 11 years old. He later attended Cordwainers' Technical College in England (now known as the London College of Fashion). Choo's humble beginnings can be traced back to his workshop in Hackney, East London. His excellent craftsmanship and designs soon became noticed and he came to the verge of international fame when his creations were featured in a record eight pages in a 1988 issue of Vogue magazine. The company Jimmy Choo Ltd was co-founded with UK Vogue accessories editor Tamara Mellon in 1996.

In April 2001, Choo sold his 50% stake in the company for £10 million. He has since concentrated his work on the exclusive Jimmy Choo Couture line produced under license from Jimmy Choo Ltd. This is available, by appointment only, at Connaught Street off Oxford Street in London. The Jimmy Choo London line (also known as Jimmy Choo ready-to-wear or simply Jimmy Choo) remains under the management of Tamara Mellon and Sandra Choi, niece of Choo's wife Rebecca. The ready-to-wear line has expanded to include accessories such as handbags.

In 2000, Choo was bestowed a state award carrying the title of Dato' by the Sultan of Pahang state in Malaysia for his achievements. In June 2003, Choo was conferred an OBE by Queen Elizabeth II in recognition of his services to the shoe and fashion industry in the UK. His achievements were again recognised by the Governor of his home state of Penang with the awarding of the Darjah Setia Pangkuan Negeri in July 2004. Expanding the Company

As accessories editor at Vogue UK, Tamara Yeardye Mellon sensed a real demand for stylish but wearable shoes and approached Choo to discuss a possible business venture.

Tamara partnered with Choo to start the ready to wear company and sourced factories in Italy to produce the shoes on a larger scale. Consequently, plans were made to open the first Jimmy Choo stand alone boutique and to develop the wholesale business throughout the fashion capitals of the world.

In April 2001, the expansion of Jimmy Choo took a significant step forward with the announcement of a new partnership with Equinox Luxury Holdings Ltd. Equinox acquired Choo's share of the ready to wear business with Robert Bensoussan, Equinox's chief executive becoming CEO of Jimmy Choo Ltd. Within 3 years, the company opened 26 new stores, (in addition to the existing four) and introduced both handbag and small leather goods collections.

This was followed by another dramatic move in November 2004 with Lion Capital (now Hicks Muse Hedge Funds (Europe)) announcing the acquisition of a majority shareholding in Jimmy Choo Ltd, in a transaction valuing the company at £101 million.

In February 2007, Hicks Muse exited its position in Jimmy Choo Ltd, selling its stake to Towerbrook Capital Partners for £185 million. Management including Tamara Mellon continued to own a significant stake. In April 2007, Joshua Schulman - a seasoned luxury goods executive- was named as Chief Executive Officer, succeeding Robert Bensoussan.

With the ethos in both design and outlook remaining the same, Jimmy Choo is looking to expand which will result in the opening of up to 50 stores by 2008.
