Resort Activities

Jiminy Peak is a small to medium sized ski resort in Hancock, Massachusetts in the Berkshires. The mountain is owned and operated by Brian Fairbank. During the winter Jiminy Peak offers activities for the whole family, including skiing, snowboarding, outdoor pools, and various restaurants. There are 44 trails and eight lifts, including a six-person, high speed chairlift. In the summer additional activities are offered, such as a brand new alpine super slide, mountain coaster, miniature golf, fishing, hiking, and mountain biking. In July 2007 Jiminy became the first private US business (and only ski resort) to invest in it's own megawatt class wind turbine. The turbine will generate up to 35% of the annual energy used at the resort. Winter, when the wind blows the strongest, is when the resort uses the most energy for things like lifts, snowmaking. This is the largest commitment in Jiminy Peak's ongoing environmental sustainability efforts.


In the past decade the mountain has been increasingly developed for real estate, as the demand for housing and activities has also increased. The small resort is a common getaway for families from New York City and Long Island, as well as eastern Massachusetts and for locals from the Berkshires and from Albany, New York. The mountain is also used for meetings and conferences, as well as for weddings and other parties. Jiminy Peak is conveniently located in an area with many cultural attractions. The mountain is only twenty minutes away from Williamstown, which is home to the elite Williams College, as well as the Clark Art Institute. The Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art is about half an hour away. Great Barrington is a close drive, and Lenox where Tanglewood, the outdoor music venue, is located is a common summer attraction. Criticisms

Jiminy Peak is known locally for being a "slave driver." The minimal amount of compensation given to their employees is almost insulting for the high demand they require from them. For example, Skiwee instructors who are in charge of sometimes over ten young children at once on the forty plus trails Jiminy offers receive well under eight dollars per hour for their service.


It can also be argued that Jiminy is far too commericial for being such a small mountain.
