Jewett is a city located in Leon County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 861.

Jewett is located at 31°21'44" North, 96°8'41" West (31.362119, -96.144630)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.4 km˛ (2.1 mi˛). 5.3 km˛ (2.1 mi˛) of it is land and 0.1 km˛ (0.04 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.97% water.


As of the census2 of 2000, there are 861 people, 333 households, and 223 families residing in the city. The population density is 161.4/km˛ (418.4/mi˛). There are 399 housing units at an average density of 74.8/km˛ (193.9/mi˛). The racial makeup of the city is 75.15% White, 7.67% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 14.87% from other races, and 2.32% from two or more races. 23.58% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 333 households out of which 38.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.1% are married couples living together, 14.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.0% are non-families. 30.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.59 and the average family size is 3.22.

In the city the population is spread out with 31.6% under the age of 18, 10.1% from 18 to 24, 27.4% from 25 to 44, 18.7% from 45 to 64, and 12.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 31 years. For every 100 females there are 94.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.6 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $26,250, and the median income for a family is $33,500. Males have a median income of $31,667 versus $20,347 for females. The per capita income for the city is $17,469. 26.4% of the population and 21.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 29.7% of those under the age of 18 and 21.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Jewett is on State Highway 79, Farm Road 39, and the Missouri Pacific line near its intersection with that of the Burlington Northern, some twelve miles northwest of Centerville in northwestern Leon County.
The Jewett Methodist Church was built in 1873, a Baptist church was organized in 1876, and a Cumberland Presbyterian church was organized in 1884.
Jewett's population declined to 515 by 1930, rose to 589 by 1950, dropped to 445 by 1960, and began to rise again in the 1970s.
