Just ask JerryMessing, a 70-year-old retired salesman in West Palm Beach, Fla. Eight years ago, he carried a hefty 214 pounds on his medium-build, 5-foot-10-inch frame.
Then, in 1992, Messing suffered a heart attack, which, fortunately, he survived.
Messing previously lacked motivation, but a heart attack and his doctor's urgings were a wake-up call to inspire change.
Messing was born in the New York City borough of Brooklyn to American Jewish parents Brian Messing (a sales executive for a jewelry manufacturer) and Sandra (who has worked as a professional singer, banker, travel and real estate agent).
Messing was inclined to take some time off, but the pilot for Will and Grace intrigued her, and she received the role, beating out actress Nicolette Sheridan, who also auditioned for it, and later guest starred on the show.
Messing has also stated that she intends to move back to New York, and with her Will and Grace commitments now over and rumors of a Broadway play in Fall 2006, she will likely be returning soon.
