On February 23, 2002, in Marseille, France, Mormeck captured the WBA cruiserweight title via a 9th round TKO of Virgil Hill. Following three defenses, he added the WBC cruiserweight crown to his collection on April 22, 2005, by way of a twelve round unanimous decision over Wayne Braithwaite in Worcester, Massachusetts. He lost his WBA and WBC titles by knockout to O'Neil Bell on January 7, 2006, in a fight for the undisputed (WBC/WBA/IBF) Cruiserweight championship of the world, but regained it on March 17, 2007. Prior to the O'Neil Bell fight, Mormeck did not have a nickname, which is quite unusual among boxers. He asked the fans to select a nickname, and until announced at the Bell fight did not know that the fans had selected the name "The Marksman."
