Jasper County is a county located in the state of Indiana. As of 2000, the population is 30,043. The county's county seat is Rensselaer, Indiana6.


Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,454 km˛ (561 mi˛). 1,450 km˛ (560 mi˛) of it is land and 4 km˛ (1 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.24% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 30,043 people, 10,686 households, and 8,217 families residing in the county. The population density is 21/km˛ (54/mi˛). There are 11,236 housing units at an average density of 8/km˛ (20/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 97.97% White, 0.35% Black or African American, 0.18% Native American, 0.19% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.63% from other races, and 0.68% from two or more races. 2.44% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 10,686 households out of which 36.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 65.40% are married couples living together, 7.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 23.10% are non-families. 19.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.72 and the average family size is 3.13.


In the county the population is spread out with 27.40% under the age of 18, 10.10% from 18 to 24, 27.70% from 25 to 44, 22.30% from 45 to 64, and 12.40% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 98.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.40 males.


The median income for a household in the county is $43,369, and the median income for a family is $50,132. Males have a median income of $38,544 versus $22,191 for females. The per capita income for the county is $19,012. 6.70% of the population and 4.60% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 8.00% of those under the age of 18 and 5.10% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Supercentenarian Minnie Kearby, oldest resident of Indiana, was perhaps one of Jasper's best-known resident; born in Ireland in April 1893, she moved to a Jasper care facility in November 2004.
Jasper is also the hometown to famous baseball play Scott Rolen, 3rd basemen on the St. Louis Cardinals.
