Dutch playwright, novelist and occasional social critic, Jan de Hartog's historical memorial The Hospital (1964), which exposed the horrid conditions of Houston's charity hospital in the 1960's, led to significant reforms of that city's indigent healthcare system.
JandeHartog was born on April 22, 1914, in Haarlem, the Netherlands.
DeHartog left home at the age of ten to work as a sailor on fishing boats, steamers and tugboats, becoming an adjunct inspector with the Amsterdam Harbor Police.
His 1940 novel Hollands Glorie was based on deHartogs own experiences as a sailor, but it became a symbol of Dutch resistance against the Nazi occupation of World War II and was banned.
