The Players Championship is a professional snooker tournament. It is the current name of the ranking tournament held in Scotland every year.

The tournament has had a bewildering number of name changes in its history. Until recently it was commonly known as the Scottish Open, prior to that as the International.

The tournament started life in 1981 as the Jameson International. The following year, it become a ranking event. Apart from a hiatus from 1990/91 to 1991/92, the tournament has remained a ranking event ever since.

Dennis was born in Coalisland, Co. Tyrone in Northern Ireland and started playing snooker when he was nine and was the local senior champion at 14.
In one of those finals, the 1981 Jameson International, he was embarrassed to be whitewashed 9-0 by Steve Davis.
Success was to come in his 13th season as a professional, 1984/5 and strangely, it was the sudden death of his mother which was to be his inspiration.
Snooker world rankings - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (706 words)
The snooker world rankings are a system of ranking professional snooker players.
Unlike dynamic ranking systems such as the World golf rankings, the snooker rankings remain constant throughout the season (from the end of one world championship to the end of the next).
Over the next few years, results from the Jameson International, the Professional Players tournament (later known as the LG Cup, now the Grand Prix), the Lada Classic, the UK Championship and the British Open were added to the ranking formula.
