Jamaaladeen Tacuma was born in 1956 as Rudy McDaniel in Hempstead, New York and grew up in Philadelphia, where he showed an early interest in music.
Tacuma soon took over Coleman's notion of harmolodics, which replaced the earlier notion of harmonies underpinning melodic lines by a new notion of reciprocal interaction in the course of improvisation.
