LINK-Radlinski Publications--Anatomy of a Jackknife (1961 words)
In the case of the classical jackknife (where the tractor drive wheels lock), the relatively short tractor spins very rapidly and the driver does not have time to react before it is too late.
This type of jackknife can also occur if too much engine power is applied and the drive wheels spin or if the driver enters a curve too fast and uses engine braking to slow the vehicle.
The possibility of a jackknife occuring is greater when a vehicle is empty due to the fact that the drive-axle is unloaded and is relatively easy to lock up.
