It is situated in the Eifel, near the border with Luxembourg, at the confluence of the rivers Prüm and Nims. It is located approx. 15 km south-west of Bitburg and 5 km north-east of Echternach. Until Adolf Hitler came to power in 1933, the town of Irrel near the Luxemburg border was just another small town in the Eifel.
Irrel was chosen because it sat directly on the route from Luxemburg to Bitburg between two high areas- Katzenkopf and Döllberg.
Built on top of these two high areas were two of the largest bunkers; four stories high with 45 rooms, all of which had different purposes.
