Hocus Pocus is a children's Halloween themed film. Midler, Parker and Najimy star as three sisters who were witches sentenced to death in the 17th century; they return 300 years later thanks to a curse cast by eldest sister Winifred. They embark on a plan to achieve eternal youth by stealing the souls of local children before sunrise, but their plans are thwarted by a trio of children including a young Thora Birch. The film was critically panned and widely criticized for content that was deemed too scary or adult-oriented for young people. (In particular the character played by Parker seems to have an insatiable sexual appetite and this includes advances made towards a teenage boy.) The film has since become a cult classic and often airs on television, particularly during Halloween. [KFCC] Hocus Pocus Review (663 words)
Interestingly enough, a year before that film, he appeared in Hocus Pocus, which in a way was a warm up for the role which Lam Ching Ying not only made his own, but spilled a lot of dog's blood doing it.
Hocus Pocus isn't a horror/comedy as such, and certainly provides less scares than many HK films of the genre.
Hocus Pocus is interesting, amusing, flamboyant, exotic and stars Lam Ching Ying.
