The New Jersey Devils sought to address the the departures of Brian Rafalski and Scott Gomez to free agency by signing former NY Rangers defenseman Karel Rachunek to a one-year, $1.5 millon contract and Zubrus to a six-year, $20 million contract.
Devils GM Lou Lamoriello claimed after losing Rafalski to free agency that he had faith in current Devils like Paul Martin and Johnny Oduya to shoulder the load, but it was obvious that he still need to bring in some experienced depth for his blueline.
